Framed Reprint of “Jesus Christ Chasing the Moneychangers from the Temple” by Matthias Stom

Bring the powerful and dramatic biblical scene of Jesus Christ Chasing the Moneychangers from the Temple into your home with this exquisite framed reprint of the masterpiece by Matthias Stom. Based on the Gospel of Matthew 21:12-14, this painting vividly captures the moment when Jesus, in righteous anger, drives out the merchants and moneychangers who had turned the sacred Temple in Jerusalem into a marketplace:

Jesus went straight to the Temple and threw out everyone who had set up shop, buying and selling. He kicked over the tables of loan sharks and the stalls of dove merchants. He quoted this text: My house was designated a house of prayer; You have made it a hangout for thieves. Now there was room for the blind and crippled to get in. They came to Jesus and he healed them.

This key episode in the life of Christ reflects His zeal for the sanctity of God’s house and serves as a poignant reminder of spiritual integrity over worldly gain.

Christ’s Righteous Anger

Matthias Stom masterfully portrays the intensity of this moment. In the painting, Jesus is seen coming in on the right side of the composition, forcefully driving out the merchants with a whip, His expression filled with divine authority and righteous indignation. The chaos of the scene is reflected in the frightened faces of the moneychangers and their shrinking back. This powerful depiction emphasizes Christ’s role not only as a compassionate Savior but also as one who enforces divine justice.

Reflecting on Christian Purity

The scene of Jesus cleansing the temple carries a profound message about the importance of spiritual purity and the proper use of sacred spaces. When Jesus said, “My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of thieves” (Matthew 21:13), He was reminding the people that the temple should be a place of worship and reverence, not profit. This event is a call for Christians to reflect on their own lives, ensuring that their devotion to God remains sincere and untainted by materialism.

Masterful Baroque Artwork by Matthias Stom

Matthias Stom, a 17th-century Dutch Baroque painter, was known for his powerful use of chiaroscuro (the contrast of light and shadow), which he employed to heighten the drama and emotion of biblical scenes. In Jesus Christ Chasing the Moneychangers from the Temple, Stom masterfully uses this technique to create a stark contrast between the illuminated figure of Christ and the darkened, chaotic crowd around Him. The dramatic lighting enhances the spiritual significance of the scene, drawing the viewer’s attention to the central figure of Christ and His actions.

Framed with Elegance and Care

This framed reprint is available in multiple sizes to fit perfectly into any space. The museum-quality print ensures that every detail of Stom’s masterpiece is faithfully reproduced, from the subtle expressions of the figures to the striking contrasts of light and shadow. About the Painter

Matthias Stom

Matthias Stom, also known as Matthias Stomer, was a notable 17th-century Dutch painter, best recognized for his masterful use of chiaroscuro and his dramatic biblical scenes. Born around 1600, Stom was heavily influenced by the style of Caravaggio, which is evident in his intense contrast between light and dark, heightening the emotional impact of his works. Stom's religious compositions, such as "The Supper at Emmaus" and "Christ Crowned with Thorns," are characterized by their powerful realism and the expressive portrayal of human emotion. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Stom focused less on idealized beauty and more on the raw, unpolished aspects of his subjects, lending his works a grounded and earthy quality. His figures often appear illuminated by a single light source, usually a candle or torch, creating an intimate and dramatic atmosphere. While Stom spent much of his career in Italy, particularly in Naples and Sicily, he remained relatively obscure during his lifetime compared to other Caravaggisti. However, his distinctive style and evocative storytelling have earned him greater recognition over time. Today, Stom's works are appreciated for their emotional depth, skillful use of light, and the compelling way they bring biblical stories to life.

good quality. The hardware to hang it had to be manually hammered into the back of the frame, so that was a bit tricky to do without damaging it.

High-quality canvas reprint of a well-known Christian artwork.
